Universiti Malaya (UM) proudly reaffirms the university’s position as Malaysia’s top institution in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, and marking a historic milestone with the debut of the Law discipline in the 151–175 global band.
UM continues to lead the nation, being ranked the top in Malaysia in 8 out of 11 subject categories:
In addition to excelling in these fields, UM has improved its global rankings in five subject areas, highlighting its unwavering commitment to academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and transformative education. This achievement further solidifies UM’s position as a trailblazing institution in Malaysia, Asia, and beyond, driven by strategic innovation, inclusivity, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge and eminence.
The Vice-Chancellor of UM, Professor Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman said that this recognition, especially the inaugural ranking of our Law discipline, is a proud milestone for UM that epitomises the quintessence of the unwavering commitment to world class quality and standards. It reflects UM’s steadfast commitment to delivering world-class education, fostering academic excellence, and contributing meaningfully to society and the world.
“The success of these rankings is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire campus community, especially our academic and research talent, as well as our non-academic workforce who have worked tirelessly and with great tenacity to meet our internally set Key Performance Indicators," said Professor Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan. “This is in line with the ultimate aspirations of creating new breakthroughs for the world, and in contributing to civilisational progress”, he added.
About Universiti Malaya (UM)
UM is the country’s first university. Following the passing of the University of Malaya Act in 1961 by Parliament, UM was recognised as a public university. UM, as it is known today, was officially made a public university in the Federation of Malaya on 1 January 1962.
UM is supported by two academies, fourteen faculties, two institutes and one academic centre that encompass medicine, science, technology, social sciences and humanities. The university also houses Malaysia’s first and biggest teaching hospital - UMMC. In addition, the Research Cluster had been formed to drive further breakthroughs in knowledge. The emphasis on research is strengthened by the presence of centres of excellence at several of its learning centres.
UM has made a significant achievement by securing a position among the top 60 universities globally in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS-WUR) for 2025. This accomplishment marks a 5-place improvement from the previous year and a notable 10-place climb since the 2023 rankings. This new ranking positions UM in the top 4% of the 1,503 institutions evaluated by QS globally.

Universiti Malaya (UM) mengekalkan kedudukannya sebagai institusi terkemuka di Malaysia menerusi ranking terkini Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, sekali gus mencatat sejarah dengan penyenaraian pertama bidang Undang-Undang dalam kumpulan 151–175 di peringkat global.
8 daripada 11 kategori bidang subjek di UM meraih kedudukan tertinggi di Malaysia. Bidang -bidang subjek tersebut adalah seperti berikut:
• Perniagaan dan Ekonomi
• Perubatan dan Kesihatan
• Sains Komputer
• Pendidikan
• Kejuruteraan
• Sains Hayat
• Psikologi
• Sains Sosial
Di samping kecemerlangan dalam bidang-bidang subjek ini, UM turut mencatat peningkatan dalam ranking global untuk lima bidang subjek, mencerminkan komitmen tidak berbelah bahagi universiti terhadap kecemerlangan akademik, penyelidikan berimpak tinggi, dan pendidikan yang membawa perubahan besar. Pencapaian ini mengukuhkan lagi kedudukan UM sebagai institusi terunggul di Malaysia, Asia, dan dunia, didorong oleh inovasi strategik, inklusif, serta usaha gigih dalam memperkasa ilmu dan kecemerlangan.
Naib Canselor UM, Profesor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman, menyatakan bahawa pengiktirafan ini, khususnya pencapaian pertama dalam bidang Undang-Undang, adalah satu detik kebanggaan bagi UM yang melambangkan komitmen kukuh terhadap kualiti dan standard akademik bertaraf dunia. Ia mencerminkan dedikasi UM dalam menyediakan pendidikan bertaraf dunia, memupuk kecemerlangan akademik, serta menyumbang secara signifikan kepada masyarakat dan dunia.
“Kejayaan ranking ini adalah bukti dedikasi dan usaha keras seluruh komuniti kampus, terutamanya bakat akademik dan penyelidikan kami, serta tenaga kerja bukan akademik yang telah bekerja tanpa mengenal lelah untuk mencapai Indikator Prestasi Utama (KPI) yang ditetapkan secara dalaman,” kata Profesor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan.
“Ini selaras dengan aspirasi utama kami untuk mencipta kejayaan baharu bagi dunia dan menyumbang kepada kemajuan tamadun,” tambah beliau.
